Gueliz, a Western-inspired district

King Mohammed VI launched the construction of the districts of Gueliz and Hivernage in the 2000s. These are modern areas located to the west of the Medina that attract the wealthiest populations. Gueliz, known as the European Quarter, was the first modern district to be built outside the city walls of Marrakech thanks to the French architect Henri Prost. The district is characterized by its many offices, shops, restaurants, café terraces and bars. Gueliz is home to the local headquarters of several major banks, as well as "Western" shops and franchises.
