The birth of the museum

On October 19, 2017, 15 days after the opening of the Yves Saint Laurent Museum in Paris in the former fashion house of designer Yves Saint Laurent, a museum of the same name opened its doors in Marrakech, after 3 years of work.

In 1966, Yves Saint Laurent discovered the Red City with his companion and mentor Pierre Bergé, who was responsible for the construction of this museum. A true source of inspiration, Marrakech was for them the place where they met, loved and worked together. Dedicated to the couturier, the museum was designed by French architects Karl Fournier and Olivier Marty of Studio KO Marrakech Paris under the supervision of Pierre Bergé. He wanted to create a contemporary building, full of life, and in total integration with its environment. Thus, with an architecture that is both French and Moroccan, the building has beautiful elegant curves and refined lines, made of pink bricks.

A monumental and symbolic cultural centre

This monumental and symbolic place was designed to host temporary exhibitions with a vast and enriched programme. Built as a cultural centre on 4000 m2, it has a permanent exhibition space of 400m2, a temporary exhibition room, a research library with more than 5,000 books, an auditorium with 150 seats, a bookshop and a café with a terrace. In short, it is the perfect combination of culture and art.

Inside, we find part of the couturier's collection of nearly 5,000 pieces of clothing, 15,000 haute couture accessories and tens of thousands of designs. And, part of the Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent Foundation's permanent collection is also on display. In addition, a wall of photographs retraces the career of the great designer, from the letter of recommendation sent by the director of Vogue magazine in 1954, to the end of his career in haute couture in 2002, six years before his death.

Close to the Jardin Majorelle and the Villa Oasis, where the designer came to recharge his batteries, the Musée Yves Saint Laurent is therefore a tribute to the couturier's art and his person.
